Night from hell….Merrick’s accident
Well it’s been a while since Merrick’s accident. I’ve thought about putting it all down for a blog post many times but every time I start to type things up or think about writing it, it seems to make it real again. It’s almost like I’m reliving the memory, the guilt hits me again and I just want to run away from it. I am very thankful for the great outcome we had and feel more than blessed. I know how lucky we are but there’s just such a guilty feeling about the whole thing. At times I feel almost ashamed to tell people because I feel like we should have been able to prevent it. I know accidents happen, I get that…but why Merrick?
Long story as short as I can make it but I’m sure I’ll ramble. Merrick was home with Patrick while I was at swim lessons with Braysen in a nearby town. He went to get the bath ready in the upstairs hall bath. Our upstairs is very open so you can see everything and our playroom is up there. Since taking this picture we had gotten a play kitchen and put against he railing by the TV. Merrick was happily playing with the play kitchen Patrick said and he heard giggling then a thud. Merrick got up the kitchen and over the banister railing very quickly I guess. Patrick rushed downstairs to find Merrick laying on his side and crying but moving fine. He picked him up and called me but didn’t get me at first. I noticed the text right after I put Braysen in the water for his swim class. When I called him, he was calm but you could tell he was also shook up when telling me Merrick had a fall. I’m asking where he fell from and when I found it was the second story I told him to get to the ER right away. The town we live in is a small one so it was best to get into he car and drive rather than wait for an ambulance from a neighboring town to get to him then transport.
Here’s the picture of the playroom area (kitchen he climbed up on is not in this picture). The railing to the right of the TV on the little stand is what he went up and over…about 16 feet onto a Pergo wood floor. This is also the view from where Patrick was ..next to the bathroom. The rest of the story is linked after the picture.
